Who's behind it, and what the name means
Behind the camera
I'm Akki, based in Auckland, New Zealand. I spent ten years working in IT before moving into hospitality and events, where I now work supervising and looking after VIP guests.
I picked up a camera over fifteen years ago. I'm the youngest in my family, and on every trip growing up nobody else wanted the job of taking photos, so it landed on me and stayed there. I'm self-taught -- mostly a Sony, sometimes just my phone.
Vignette is where the photos and notes from those trips end up: a proper record, so one trip doesn't blur into the next, and a reason to go back afterward and work out what each stop was actually like.
The name
Three unrelated definitions, and this site is named after all of them.
Photography
The darkening or blurring at the edges of a photo, deliberate or not, that pulls the eye back toward the middle of the frame.
Literature
A short scene or sketch that's complete in itself -- not a full story, just one moment on its own.
Toll roads
In Austria, Switzerland and a few other European countries, the sticker (or now, e-sticker) you buy to use the motorways -- proof you've paid to be on the road.
